Dropping the Bomb

We waited to drop the bomb until we saw our families. The morning we left Hawaii for California, the phone rang at 447AM. I know because I peered at the clock. I heard Hubby say, "Yes, sir. I will have my phone on in a few more hours." He hung up, went to the bathroom, and was about to climb back in bed.

Me: Was that about scheduling an interview for the San Diego job?
Him: No, sweetie. I was just offered the job and I accepted.

And if you know him, you know he is Mr. Even Keeled. He takes such news in stride.

My eyes flew open. After two months, we finally heard something for the first time about this job. And it was a life changing something.

We sat quietly in the early hours of the morning, taking in the news. The silence broke, and we shared how we both felt peace about moving to San Diego. We knew he would accept if he was offered. We expected him to have an interview, though.

Really, the motivation to move was his. Hubby's current boss and now future boss wanted to know why, from the beginning. In the previous months, I questioned his motivation, too. I love San Diego. For much time I have called it "The Land Flowing With Milk and Honey", and even "The Promised Land." It's my home. But it's not like taking a job in D.C. for him. His motivation was simple. He produced the same answer. Our two little boys need to know their grandparens better.

We return to Hawaii on Sunday. Our home will be listed in a week. We are still expecting company before we leave the island.

We have spent a lot of time in San Diego looking at homes this week. They are large enough for visitors. San Diegans boast that we have been named America's Finest City. So we are expecting you.

I know. Stand up, dust yourself off, and recover from your shock.

  1. Okay now that I've had a few moments to gather my thoughts together into something coherent... I have to admit that when I read the first line of your post I thought, "oh no is she pregnant with number 3 and didn't tell me before announcing it to the whole blogosphere?"

Just promise me that you aren't gonna go for the double whammy and make that your follow up blog entry! But in all honesty what could really top San Diego ;)?

  2. Congrats!! At least San Diego will be less of a shock to Son1 than VA would have been. And since I've never been to CA, we may have to visit sometime! -Tim

  3. My mouth is hanging open like a fish. I haven't even made it to visit you in Hawaii yet! Sniff. I'm so happy for you guys, though. I know how you love the Promised Land. And your reasons are absolutely perfect. It is important to know the grandparents. You won't regret it.

  5. I'm excited for you -- and for us! We'll surely get to see while we're all living in California! (I think it's telling that our families each wound up in California for the same reason -- to be near the grandparents.) Congratulations. We're already praying for all your transition...
