Distance

***

The Gypsy Mama is hosting Five Minute Friday.

Here are the rules:

Write for 5 minutes flat for pure unedited love of the written word.

Today’s topic is Distance.

GO.

A couple of weeks ago I unfolded the huge map of the United States and spread it across the floor of my 1928 craftsman in Massachussetts, just as I had spread it across 2005 cold tiles in my California home almost a year ago.

I cannot measure distance the same way as my hubs, on an iPad or laptop. I need to feel the map between my fingers and see the cross sections of states in one whole picture. I cannot solely rely on the GPS in my car. This is odd to my man, but still he allows me to generally plan the route.

This summer we will once again travel three thousand miles across the country with 3 small children in tow. We will speak volumes across distance, we will grow our family ties across distance, and we will see a whole new route than when we left last July.

The distance will grow us. I don't know how, but I know it. The journey will mark part of our summer, of wild stories, adventures, and probably mishaps. We will see more than the stretches of highways.

STOP.

That was 5 minutes, except for formatting and uploading the photo!

  1. I love this. These journeys that take us these distances mean so much, show so much, and help us grow so much. Another nice five minutes!

  2. I think driving across the country would be so exciting. I've always wanted to do it one summer...just take our time and see what's between the oceans. I love that y'all are taking a different route. And I'm like you. I like real maps. :)

  3. I'm impressed you can read a map! Who knows where my family would end up if I was left in charge of the directions.

Thanks for visiting my blog last Friday :)

  4. What a wonderful post...I too, love real maps (just like I love real books). When you can tangibly touch where you are going, somehow it makes it come alive, this idea of travel, of distance. I also love the obvious love and connectedness of your family.... Just beautiful! (Thanks for commenting on my blog, too!) :) Safe travels.

  5. I rely on my GPS, but I LOVE maps . . . maps in atlases, in airline magazines,on classroom walls, ahhhhhhhhhh! They are wonderful and wondrous and hold so much possibility.

Hey---if your road leads through Denver and I'm home (and not past my eyeballs in people) it would be fantastic to meet you. Sadly, I don't have room to house a mouse let alone a family, but . . . yeah. Just thought I'd mention that.

  7. Well, you know me...I drove twice across country without a GPS. I learned how to look at mile markers from my big sis :) (not common on the west coast) Anyhow, can I just say what a cute little boy my newphew is!

  8. Oh I love that your planning a family road trip! They are so fun and yes, the stuff of great memories. I also love maps - I blame my midwestern roots. I cannot do GPS. I need the whole picture, like you said. Can't wait to read about your trip!
