Wordless Wednesday:
Almost all of our street names are in the Hawaiian language. There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. Street names are difficult to pronounce so many locals give directions by landmark and not street name.

You know what is so funny? When we lived in Hawaii, we lived on Brokaw St!! It's the street right next to Rainbow Drive Inn!! Go figure!
ReplyDeleteWell I wouldn't be very good at speaking it but I love to listen to it being spoken!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Hawaii, but after watching Jon & Kate plus 8 the other night I think I might put that on my bucket list.
ReplyDeleteYeah I would have a hard time pronouncing those names. LOL. We southerners give landmark directions too!
ReplyDeleteI love hearing stories like yours. Even in the U.S. there are many different cultures, traditions, and such.
ReplyDeleteMy husband thinks it's hilarious every time the name of the Hawaii state fish rolls off my tongue- and I don't think twice about it. As we're planning a trip there, I rattle off place names I want to visit and he just stares blankly. Ah, I miss it...
ReplyDeleteholy cow...I have no idea!
ReplyDeleteI did learn that you pronounce every vowel--unlike the English language. The only two words I learned when we were there, though, were Aloha and Mahalo. Maybe I need to take another trip over to learn some more, huh? LOL
ReplyDeleteOh, we miss Hawaii!
ReplyDeleteHaha, so funny!
ReplyDeleteHey, that's the street corner of your local park :)
ReplyDeleteIt's actually a mile away.
ReplyDeleteHOPE all is well in Hawaii! Just arrived back to GA from VA! Recovering will take dasy...LOL
ReplyDeleteI should add, I grew up in Mililani :)
ReplyDeleteThe street names are especially problematic when you are trying to naviagate for a driver who doesn't read phonetically very well. We did a lot of turning around on our first visit to Honolulu :).
ReplyDeleteWe got our tea in the mail!!! Thanks so much, I can't wait to bust into it :). (And it is actually supposed to get cold here tomorrow afternoon, so I should have some good opportunities soon.) Thanks again, Farmer Files!
And I complain because I have to spell Holmgren Crescent (my street) all the time!
ReplyDeleteokay, so most of my Hawaian, I learned from Lilo, 'nuff said? Maybe we should take a trip to learn the language. Sounds good anyway!
ReplyDeleteWe were in base housing so our street was easy to prounounce, but I can do both of those streets!
