Wordless Wednesday:
Old Glory flies high over the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. 1,102 sailors found their final resting place on the USS Arizona battleship, sunken below by Japanese imperial forces. The memorial stretches over the hull of the battleship, without touching it.
Come back tomorrow and read my memoir of September 11, 2001 when we lived just outside of Washington, D.C.

ReplyDeleteI remember visiting the Arizona. It was the year of the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. They had a special all day tour going to historic places from that day. There were only about 6 people on our tour. We were the first ones on the Arizona that morning. It was so peaceful and quiet. Then we went to Hickam Field, the cemetery,a few other places, and had lunch at Scofield Barracks. That still is one of the favorite and most memorable tours I've ever taken.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo! I dream of going to see the memorial someday...
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to visit this memorial. Great photo!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo. I was only in 5th grade when we went to Hawaii and I saw the Arizona Memorial. It has had a lasting impression. There simply is nothing like it in the world and quite touching.
ReplyDeleteHappy WW!

ReplyDeleteGreat shot and very moving! Thanks for stopping by...Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteHow could I ever forget visiting the USS Arizona Memorial. I always thought that the Vietnam memorial in DC was the most emotionally provoking one I'd been to... that was of course until we visited this one in Pearl Harbor.
ReplyDeleteThere is just something about knowing that the memorial you are visiting is not just a place to remember those who gave all, but also the exact location where so many took their last breath... that gets me all emotional and weepy.
Beautiful, and very fitting...
