Gold Does Grow On Trees

Fruit ripens over night in Hawaii. Honestly. Through our sliding glass door I caught an eyeful of bold gold. I hesitated to pick the fruit, but ignored thoughts of the Eye Candy Principle after last time.I grabbed some shoes from our lanai. The grass was still wet from the morning rain. I tottered on the planter and twisted the papayas until they snapped off the trunk. They don't grow on the branches. They flower from the trunk of the tree, near where the tallest branches meet. The smaller one was the size of the can, in height, but far more plump. The papayas in the store are smaller since they are grown in large quantities just for distribution.

I can't count these papayas out for eye candy. Son2 woke from his nap and screamed at the sight of the papayas. He was ready! It's been a few weeks since our last fruits. He polished off half the smaller papaya for lunch!

  1. What will you try to go in CA? Just wondering? Here I have HERBS (all legal) going around my flower beds. I added basil, rosemary, mint and little pepper plants all in my flower beds this year and it worked beautifully!

I think I might have to go to the PUBLICS for some fresh fruit this morning after seeing your eye candy!

OO wiping drool of the keyboards!

  2. I sure wish I had a green thumb... you'd think being a farmer's wife I'd be able to grow a garden... sigh. Those papayas look great!! And right off the tree must taste just fabulous!

  3. I never saved your site and am far behind on it after our trying month; so today I remembered, dug up the last email with a link and settled in for a long read (the one about Minutes was just way too long, so I skipped it--I read top to bottom). Anyway, after reading all the memories of Hawaii, I have a pang of "Oahu sickness". :) It is beautiful here (New England, for others who may read this) right now, but I know in a few months we'll be packed with snow and I'll shiver non-stop. I'm a "freeze baby". I wish we had done more while we were there; it certainly isn't the best place to start a famiy; little ones limit so much free time. Oh well, we'll just have to plan a vacation and leave said kids with their grandparents. :)
I loved reading your posts, have added you to "favorites", look forward to more.

  5. In CA I will definitely do tomatoes, bell peppers, summer squash, cucumbers, and snow peas. Those are relatively easy. A lot will depend on the yard. We have plans to plant apple banana trees. Since they are a tropical fruit, the plants may be a little pricey, but it will be worth it to have a taste of Hawaii. I'll probably do rosemary and basil, too. I would like to have some tyoe of citrus tree or a peach tree and maybe an avocado tree. Avocado trees are gargantuan, though, and depending on the lot size will depend on whether we plant one or not. I hope to do lots of different vegetables and rotate what I grow.

LOL I just pulled my Ortho book out about vegetable gardening because I am already looking forward to growing in CA!!!

I hope you're having a wonderful day in Hawaii!
